Ajanta, testimony to a time of cultural harmony

Today we are at the Ajanta Caves in Maharashtra. These 30 rock-cut caves carved out of Basalt rock date back to the 2nd Century BC. The caves contain Buddhist art works which have been finely preserved, and they serve as an example of the Indian art that was around at the time. The stories depicted in the artwork revolve around the life of Gautham Buddha.

Just a few hours’ drive away, the Ellora Caves similarly depict artwork from the period, including Buddhist, Jain and Hindu mythologies, standing testimony to the religious harmony that existed at the time. The Ajanta and Ellora caves were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983, and have seen an increased influx of tourists since.

Ripening mangoes on a tree, India

Mango cultivation is an essential part of agriculture in India. The country is one of the largest producers of mangoes in the world, with many varieties grown in different regions. Mangoes require a warm, humid climate, and the best time for planting is during the monsoon season. Mango trees can bear fruit for over 30 years, and with proper care and maintenance, they can provide a significant source of income for farmers. Mangoes are also a highly anticipated summer treat. The bright yellow fruit, with its sweet and juicy flesh, is a favourite among kids and adults alike.

The abandoned village of Houtouwan on Shengshan Island, China

Houtouwan was a fishing village on Shengshan Island, one of nearly 400 islands in an archipelago in Hangzou Bay, about 60 kilometres from Shanghai. By the 1990s, most of the village’s residents, about 2,000 in all, had left the island. Problems with food delivery and education have been cited as the primary problems that caused the mass exodus. Now the village, overgrown and slowly decaying, has become something of a tourist attraction, with a few full-time residents conducting tours of this eerie, green ghost town.
