Close your eyes and imagine the sound of the waves amid this wonderful sunset in Corsica. Built in 1550–-1551, the Genoese Tower of Parata is a defence tower located on the peninsula of La Parata, about 15 kilometres west of Ajaccio, Corsica. It was built in the 16th century by Giacomo Lombardo, a Genoese chief mason, and is part of a set of 90 Genoese towers intended to defend the Corsican coasts from maritime attacks.

The tower of Parata offers a breathtaking view of the Sanguinaires Islands, a small archipelago composed of four rocky islets located in the Gulf of Ajaccio. They take their name from the red rocks that seem to take on a blood hue at sunset. The Grand Site of the Sanguinaires Islands and the Pointe de la Parata have been awarded the 'Grand Site de France' label, which rewards the commitment of local stakeholders to the preservation and sustainable management of the site.

Today is Madras Day, a day that commemorates the foundation of this southern city. It was on this day in 1639 that the village of Madraspatnam (also called Chennapatnam) was purchased by the East India Company. Soon after, the Fort St. George was built, and it still stands as one of the landmarks of the city, as does the Egmore Museum pictured on today’s home page. Started in 1851, it is the 2nd oldest museum in the country, the oldest being the Kolkata museum. The grounds of the museum also host a library, and the ‘museum theatre’, where musical nights, and theatrical performances are a welcome change from the humdrum of daily life to the Chennaite.

It was the power seat of the Chand Dynasty, who ruled this region for over a thousand years before losing it to the Gorkhas in 1790, who in turn lost the region to the British in the wars of 1814-1815.

Today we celebrate the "Day of the Libraries", which has been celebrated annually on 24 October in Germany since 1995. The Abbey Library of Waldsassen Abbey in Bavaria is a cultural treasure of the Federal Republic of Germany and an ideal representative for today. Its magnificent library hall is an architectural and artistic masterpiece with ornate ceiling paintings and an impressive collection of books, manuscripts and historical documents. The monastery itself was founded as early as 1133.

Construction of the library actually began in 1433, but it was not until 1724 and 1726 under Abbot Eugen Schmid that it was completed as we can admire it today. With an impressive collection of around 19,000 books, this library was a cultural gem. In the course of secularization, 3,520 books were selected and brought to Amberg. What happened to the remaining 15,000 volumes is still a mystery today.

nfortunately, not only books, but also other former furnishings of the monastery have disappeared. Despite all the losses, the Waldsassen Abbey Library remains a place of historical significance and cultural richness that continues to arouse the curiosity of researchers, teachers and those interested in history.
