Elaborate arched hallways lead to the throne room in Aljafería Palace, a royal fortress begun in the 11th century and one of the greatest examples of Islamic architecture in Spain. And because the palace was captured by Christian forces in the 12th century, it's also a sublime example of the Mudéjar architecture of Aragon, a style incorporating both Islamic and Iberian Christian architecture. The resulting palace here in Zaragoza is one of the country's most intact examples of cross-cultural fusion. The building's stout outer walls surround an array of wonders including delicate interwoven arches, ornate carved ceilings, and wide courtyards. Damaged in the early 1800s during the Peninsular War, Aljafería Palace was restored in the 20th century and now houses Aragon's parliament.

Bethesda Terrace's lower passage, New York City

Bethesda Terrace and Bethesda Fountain were part of the design submitted by Calvert Vaux and his new working partner, Frederick Law Olmsted, when they won the bid in 1858 to create the 'Greensward Plan' for the public greenspace in Manhattan now known as Central Park. For what they considered the heart of the park, Vaux and Olmsted designed a promenade to usher visitors either across a grand terrace or below it, through these arches to the fountain beyond and a spectacular view overlooking The Lake. Bethesda Terrace fell into disrepair during the 1970s, but since 2007 the terrace and fountain have been restored to their original splendor.

The city's history includes immigrants flocking to Jersey City in droves in the 1970s, drawn by low real estate prices and the opportunity to live the American dream. Today, these immigrants have contributed to the city's transformation into a melting pot of cultures and ethnicities from across the world.

Established in 1974, and said to be the first marine protected area in the Philippines, the Sumilon Island Marine Sanctuary draws many visitors to this far southern portion of Oslob municipality. The island itself hosts a luxe, eco-friendly resort. And while one could certainly lounge happily at water's edge, many who travel here are looking to dive right in. The crystalline waters are home to a large coral reef system and huge array of sea life. Marine turtles and blacktip sharks are often spotted off Sumilon Island, and one of the major dive sites is called 'Garden Eel Plaza,' so it's safe to say folks get a good glimpse of those creatures as well.
