A series of walking paths wind through the seven sections of this extraordinary nature preserve in Ohio. With trail names like Ash Cave, Cantwell Cliffs, Conkle's Hollow, and Rock House, you can guess that it's all about the geology here. Indeed, enormous outcroppings, echoing caves, and rock shelters of Black Hand Sandstone dominate the landscape. Our image shows a portion of the Old Man's Cave trail and the Upper Falls, one of many waterfalls that tumble over forest-clad cliffs throughout the park. Hocking Hills State Park is contiguous with Hocking State Forest, so nature lovers have much to embrace in this part of the American Midwest.

Here, even a wooden jetty attracts scores of shutterbugs. Coniston Water lies among the forests and fells of North West England, and humans have been living and working near this lake for a long, long time. Evidence of Bronze Age settlements have been discovered on its shores, and the Romans dug copper mines in the hills above the lake. Today, visitors come for the boating, swimming, long walks, and opportunities to improve their photography skills.

Banff National Park’s Moraine Lake is a blue jewel set within a remote region of the Canadian Rockies. Glacially fed and lying at over 6,000 feet in elevation, the stillness of Moraine Lake reflects the giants above it in the Valley of the Ten Peaks. It’s an exceptionally spectacular portion of landscape in an area full of jaw-dropping vistas: With more than 2,500 square miles of wilderness, Banff National Park includes a sort of greatest hits collection of Canada’s natural splendors. In our image, a stylized mix of black-and-white and color, those canoes really stand out—and look just as vibrant against the true colors of the wilderness around them.
