March 21 is the International Day of Forests, which highlights the important role that trees and their forest ecosystems play in creating a healthy environment. Here at the Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park in California, United States, the giant coastal redwoods – plus a variety of other trees, shrubs, bushes, flowers, ferns, mosses and lichens – provide a haven for many creatures, even the small and slimy. This is banana slug territory and visitors are likely to encounter the bright yellow slug – the largest slug in North America – as they journey through the park.

Although it is observed differently across the country, Parliament Hill in Ottawa hosts the Trooping the Colour, a ceremony held to mark the official birthday of the former British Sovereign. Throughout the day various events are organised, including concerts and cultural performances. As dusk settles, the sky lights up with fireworks and eyes turn skyward, sharing a moment of national pride and nostalgia—a festive bridge connecting the past to the present.

Located at an altitude of 4166 metres above sea level, the Key Gompa Tibetan monastery rests on a hilltop near the Spiti river. The colourful history of the region has seen Key under attack by the Moghuls, the Dogras, and other armies. A fire in 1840 and an earthquake in 1975 also caused damage to this monastery, which was restored by the Archeological Survey of India.

Inside, you can see the walls adorned with paintings and murals that tell of a clearly Chinese influence. There is also a collection of books, and Buddha images. The Key monastery can accommodate 250 monks, who live here during winter months, and go back to their families or jobs during the summer.
