Alstrom Point, Lake Powell, United States
If you're chasing sunsets and jaw-dropping views, come to Alstrom Point. Located in the United States, in southern Utah's Kane County, this spot in the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area stands at an impressive height of 1,428 metres. Made mostly of Entrada Sandstone, it has the same geological roots as nearby sites like Romana Mesa, its parent peak and Gunsight Butte, another sandstone summit to the east.
Part of the Lake Powell region, Alstrom Point extends southward into the vast waters of the lake, in between Padre Bay and Warm Creek Bay. When the lake is full, Alstrom Point towers nearly 305 metres above the water, offering views of the surrounding canyons. Lake Powell, spanning across Utah and Arizona, attracts around 3 million visitors every year. The lake is a maze of deep blue water winding through over 90 rock canyons. While its main stretch runs through Glen Canyon, it also snakes into over many smaller side canyons, along with the Escalante and San Juan rivers.

International Day of Peace
For the International Day of Peace, we’re featuring a dramatic artwork created by thousands of hands. Peace Doves, an installation from 2021 by sculptor Peter Walker, brought together children and community groups in Liverpool. People wrote personal messages of peace on 18,000 paper doves, which were suspended on 15.5 miles of ribbon from the ceiling of Liverpool Cathedral. If you stood inside the canopy of doves, you could look up and see where the strings of birds converged into starry points of light. Composer David Harper’s musical soundscape added another layer to the artwork, which attracted 60,000 visitors in its first month.
The International Day of Peace was first commemorated in 1981 by the United Nations. This year’s theme is 'End racism, build peace'. As the UN says, 'Achieving true peace entails much more than laying down arms. It requires the building of societies where all members feel that they can flourish. It involves creating a world in which people are treated equally, regardless of their race'.

Paying respects to the legendary Anzacs
On April 25, 1915, Australian and New Zealand forces landed on Gallipoli, meeting incredibly fierce and deadly resistance from Ottoman Turkish defenders. The battle which raged on for eight months saw the death of over 8,000 Australian soldiers – cementing the Gallipoli campaign as a sacrifice our country would never forget. As a result, each Anzac Day many Australians return to the shores of Gallipoli to pay their respects, but more locally the Australian War Memorial also hosts the Anzac Day National Ceremony. The ceremony itself follows a traditional order of service, including wreath laying, the sounding of the Last Post, observing a minute’s silence and the national anthems of both Australia and New Zealand. To all Australians who served and died in war and on operational service past and present, lest we forget.

The Indus river from a winter flight to Leh, Ladakh
One of the longest rivers of Asia, the Indus originates in Tibet and runs through the mountainous regions of Leh and Ladakh. It continues its journey to the Arabian Sea all through the length of Pakistan, where it is the national river. The prominence of this river is well understood by the fact that the Greek and Latin origins of the word ‘India’ imply ‘the land where the Indus runs’.
