Italian Republic Day

June 2 is Republic Day, an anniversary that celebrates the birth of democratic Italy. In 1946, with an institutional referendum, Italians were called upon to choose the form of the State, marking the beginning of a new political and civil season. Today this day is an opportunity to remember the value of participation, freedom and shared responsibility. From official ceremonies to local initiatives, the country pauses to reflect on the path taken and the challenges still open.

The Republic is not just an institutional system, but a living idea that is renewed every day through the contribution of those who study, work, engage and participate in collective life. It is a balance built over time, made up of rights and duties that intertwine. Celebrating June 2 also means looking to the future with awareness, remembering that democracy is never acquired once and for all, but is preserved and strengthened over time.

Telangana Day

At midnight, a map shifted—and a region found its rhythm. On 2 June 2014, Telangana became India's youngest state, carved from Andhra Pradesh, with Hyderabad as its capital. Telangana Day marks that moment—and the momentum since.

Hyderabad, the 'City of Pearls,' once led the global trade of Golconda diamonds and now powers India's IT and pharma sectors. From Charminar (pictured here) to Cyberabad, it blends heritage with high-tech. History runs deep, shaped by the Satavahanas, the Kakatiya dynasty and the Nizams of Hyderabad. The Ramappa Temple, a UNESCO site, showcases Kakatiya craftsmanship.

Festivals like Bathukamma and Bonalu keep traditions blooming. The Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project shows scale, while Sircilla keeps the looms busy, weaving the state into India's textile story. Top it off with Hyderabadi biryani, and Telangana proves it doesn't just state its case—it plates it.

Today is Yokohama Port Opening Anniversary.

Today, June 2nd, is Yokohama Port Opening Day. Japan, which had been closed off for over 200 years, opened its doors in 1854 by signing the Treaty of Peace and Amity with the United States. Based on the Ansei Five-Power Treaty signed in 1858, Yokohama Port opened on July 1, 1859 (Ansei 6, June 2). Every year on this day, the 'Yokohama Port Opening Festival' is held at Yokohama Port. Today's image shows the Minato Mirai 21 district, a planned city surrounding Yokohama Port. This district underwent full-scale development following the 1989 Yokohama Expo, and today it has been designated as a central Yokohama area, growing into a hub for tourism, business, and culture.

Happy Pride Month!

Every June, Pride Month bursts into cities and streets across the United States—but its origins lie in defiance, not festivity. The observance grew from the Stonewall uprising of June 1969, when LGBTQIA+ New Yorkers pushed back against routine police raids, igniting a movement that reshaped civil rights history.

Today's image was taken on June 28, 2020, when the legacy took on new meaning. With Pride parades canceled amid the coronavirus pandemic, Rockefeller Center stood unusually quiet as rainbow flags lined its plaza. The installation marked 50 years since the first Pride march, transforming one of New York City's most recognizable landmarks into a place of reflection rather than crowds.

Pride Month today carries both celebration and weight. It honors decades of activism, creativity, and resilience while acknowledging progress that remains unfinished. From small-town gatherings to iconic urban spaces, Pride continues to be visible—insisting that LGBTQIA+ history is not a footnote, but a living, evolving part of the American story.

The June Festivities begin!

In June, even heaven decides to join the fun. The flags sew the streets, connect poles, draw colored corridors and announce bluntly: it's already the June festival.

The origin comes from afar, from the agricultural celebrations of the European summer solstice, when fire marked the harvest cycle. Over time, these rituals were incorporated into the Catholic calendar and associated with popular saints, most notably St. John. Brought by the Portuguese, the rite gained another body in Brazil when it was mixed with indigenous, African and popular knowledge.

From north to south of the country, the party changes accents. Forró late at night in the Northeast; fairs, square dances and games in the Southeast and Midwest; pine nuts and mulled wine in the South. Between bonfires and music, we enjoyed creamy hominy, pé de moleque, tamale, corn cake and couscous, as well as mulled wine to warm up the night. The tradition started abroad. Brazil added rhythm, color and spice.

Everglades National Park, Florida, United States

Few places show their power quite like Everglades National Park in Florida, United States. From above, Florida's iconic wetlands unfold as a vast patchwork of shallow water, sawgrass, mangroves and winding channels, shaped by freshwater flowing slowly south from Lake Okeechobee.

Covering more than 6,000 square kilometres, the Everglades is the largest subtropical wilderness in the country and a vital refuge for birds, fish, reptiles and rare species such as the Florida panther, American crocodile and West Indian manatee. Wading birds including roseate spoonbills, herons and wood storks feed across these wetlands, while mangrove forests protect coastlines from storm surges and erosion. Wetlands also work behind the scenes, filtering pollutants, storing carbon, reducing floods and helping supply clean water to nearby communities. Recognised as a World Heritage Site, the park remains one of North America's most important ecosystems. Its waters support alligators and bottlenose dolphins, while seasonal rains and dry periods continually reshape habitats across the sprawling landscape each year.
